Wind checks for RVs, vans and other high-profile vehicles

Why sustained wind is only one part of a route wind check, and why official vehicle restrictions take priority.

Do not turn a forecast speed into a vehicle limit

Vehicle height, loading, trailer configuration, road orientation and gusts all affect wind exposure. An hourly wind forecast cannot establish a universal safe speed for every vehicle. RoadAheadNow’s high-profile setting increases the sensitivity of the weather indicator; it is not a certified vehicle limit.

Sustained wind is not a gust measurement

The hourly feed may provide sustained wind as a range. We use the upper end of that range for the indicator. We do not invent gusts or calculate a crosswind without a validated road bearing. Check the issuing forecast and wind alerts for information not present in the summary.

Official restrictions are a separate check

A state may issue restrictions for particular vehicle classes or weights. Those orders are not replaced by our indicator, and a lower forecast later does not establish when an order will be lifted. Open the state road service and read the exact conditions.

Use the difficult segment, not the destination

On a long open-country drive, the exposed section may be hours away from either city. Inspect its checkpoint and consider the uncertainty created by gaps between checkpoints. A later start may change the forecast there, but the route still needs a fresh official status check.
